RELEASE: Rep. Schultz statement on Minnesota Senate vote to extend reinsurance plan

Monday, March 1, 2021

SAINT PAUL, Minn. – Today, the Minnesota Senate passed a bill to extend the Minnesota Premium Security Plan, also known as reinsurance, through 2022.

State Rep. Jen Schultz (DFL – Duluth), the chief author of legislation to create a MinnesotaCare Public Option, issued the following statement:

“As Minnesotans worry more about high health care costs due to the COVID-19 pandemic, health insurance companies have notably remained profitable. Reinsurance was developed as a temporary bridge to a permanent health care solution for Minnesotans. Instead, Republicans have built a health care bridge to nowhere, and have yet to offer any solution to address the ongoing challenges of health care access and affordability.

“The MinnesotaCare Public Option would build upon a solution that has served Minnesota for three decades, giving Minnesotans access to lower premiums and a strong network of providers. As we work to recover from this crisis, Minnesotans are counting on us to tackle high health care costs. This will require new solutions that put people’s health ahead of profits.”
