Legislative Update - November 3, 2017

Friday, November 3, 2017

Dear Neighbors:

I hope that you're having a good fall. There's much to share with you since my last update. In late September, a good crowd participated in the Community Conversation on Health Care that Works for Everyone, at Carondelet Village. Since then, we've held the community information session on West Seventh (see below), and the sixth quarterly Prenatal to Three Policy Forum (more info at www.p3minnesota.org).

Report: West Seventh Community Information Session

The neighborhood around West Seventh – from the Highway 5 bridge to 35E – is the site of a number of ongoing or proposed developments, from changes in transit (see Riverview Corridor below) to new regulations for development along the Mississippi, and more. Several weeks ago, I joined Councilmember Tolbert and the Highland District Council in hosting an information session for residents. The city, county, state, and private agencies listed below provided brief summaries of their work and answered questions from residents. Here's a link to the presentations by the agencies. We’ll hold another session as these projects progress.

  • Ramsey County Regional Rail Authority – Riverview Corridor
  • Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) – Highway 5
  • St. Paul Public Works – Shepard Realignment
  • Metro Transit
  • Paster Properties - Sibley Manor
  • St. Paul Parks & Recreation – Great River Passage
  • St. Paul Planning & Economic Development (PED) / Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (MnDNR) – Mississippi River Critical Corridor Regulations

Riverview Corridor Public Hearing - November 9

One of the projects discussed during the community information session (see above) is the Riverview Corridor – a proposal for transit improvements between downtown St. Paul and the airport. There will be an open house and public hearing on Thursday, November 9 from 5:00pm-8:00 pm at Highland Park High School, 1015 Snelling Avenue S, Saint Paul. The meeting location is accessible by bus route 84, and the presentation portion of the meeting will start at 6:00 pm. This will be a good opportunity to learn more and provide feedback on the type of transit and transit route being proposed.

Voting on Tuesday

Just a reminder to vote in St. Paul’s election. You can vote this coming Tuesday, November 7, anytime between 7:00am and 8:00pm. Click here to find out where you vote on Tuesday and more. You can also vote this weekend or on Monday at several locations in the city and county.

And a reminder that our city elections use Ranked Choice Voting. Under this system, voters get to select not only their first choice, but also their second or third (or even more). Identifying backup choices isn’t mandatory, but it can give voters more choice and maximize the impact of their preferences. Most importantly: Vote!

Please reach out to my office anytime. Thank you for the honor of serving our community.
