Legislative Update (March 16, 2015)

Monday, March 16, 2015

Dear friends and neighbors,

As the March 20th committee deadline approaches, we have been hard at work at the Capitol to ensure that many important bills are being heard in their assigned committees. Just this past week, I had several bills heard before committee.

HF1377, which provides grant funding for Second Harvest Heartland, was heard before the Agriculture Policy committee last week. After much discussion on the benefits of this program for Minnesotans statewide, the committee passed the bill on to Agriculture Finance for another hearing. I’m proud to have bipartisan support on this bill, and look forward to discussing it further in committee and on the floor.

On Tuesday, I presented HF858 before the Education Finance committee. My bill authorizes grants for collaborative urban education, taking into account the unique perspective teachers from Southeast Asia, East Africa, and urban settings have to offer to our college students. I am excited to have the opportunity to discuss this bill further with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle.

HF1637, establishing a rate to aid a group home in Olmsted County, was heard in the Health and Human Services reform committee on Friday. This bill helps us better serve a vulnerable population in our community, and I’m proud to have such strong support from my colleagues.

I have several other bills that will be heard in committee in the coming weeks. I look forward to an ongoing discussion with my colleagues as my bills progress through the House.

It has been great to see so many of you in our district and in St. Paul. Just the other week, I had the opportunity to meet with many of you at the Rochester Day on the Hill. It was great to hear your thoughts and concerns about legislation before the House! If you were unable to attend the event, you can read the Rochester Post-Bulletin’s article here.

Please continue to stay in touch to share your thoughts on the bills that come before the legislature, or any community issues where I can be of assistance. You can set up a time to meet with me in my office by calling my Legislative Assistant at (651) 296-2208, or by emailing me directly at rep.nels.pierson@house.mn.

I am honored to serve you.
