Legislative Update (August 3, 2017)

Thursday, August 3, 2017

Dear Neighbors,

New Laws

Many of the bills we passed took effect on July 1, but another batch started this week on Tuesday. Among these new changes are two provisions I authored this year. The first is my dental bill to bring dental care to more people in our state. The second provision changes some of our laws relating to mental health services and helps bring qualified practitioners to more patients, including children. I’m extremely proud to have these ideas go through the legislative process and now become law to help Minnesotans. If you want a recap of some of the other bills that took effect on August 1, please click here.

Farm Family Award

Today, University of Minnesota Extension; the College of Food, Agriculture, and Natural Resources Sciences; and the College of Veterinary Medicine are honoring farm families from each county as part of the 2017 Farm Family Recognition Program. This year, Olmsted County is represented by Jim and Connie Stannard of Big Shaggy Buffalo Farm. Congratulations to Jim and Connie on being named this year’s Olmsted County Farm Family of the Year. Growing up on a family farm, I have the utmost respect for our agriculture workers and all they do for our area and our state. Jim and Connie are certainly deserving of this award; congrats!

Capitol Celebration

Starting August 11 and going until August 13, the state is hosting a big event to unveil the newly restored State Capitol building. This is four years in the making, and I have to say, the results are truly remarkable.

The weekend-long party has things for all ages including games, tours, musical performances, and other fun events.

My family loved seeing the changes when they visited me this year, and the added events will be a great chance for all ages to enjoy the celebration. The renovation looks incredible, and I hope Minnesotans from around the state will come to St. Paul to see this historic building.

Here’s a link to more information on the celebration.
