Legislative Update (March 17, 2017)

Friday, March 17, 2017

Dear Neighbors,

Health Care Bill

On Monday, we passed an important bill to bring some stability to our health insurance system in Minnesota. Our legislation, HF5, is projected to reduce insurance premiums by 17-18%. We need lower costs and more stability on the individual market, and this should be a step towards those goals.

Helping Working Families

This week, my bill to assist working families was heard in committee. The legislation would increase the amount Minnesotans could receive under the Minnesota Family Investment Program and removes the marriage penalty. The allotment for families hasn’t been raised since 1986, and could use a boost. This bill has the support of many religious groups, and I think it’s important legislation in caring for our neighbors in need.

Adoptive Foster Bill

I also had a hearing for my bipartisan adoption bill. This legislation would require the commissioner of human services to create a program to support adoptive and foster children and their families. As the parent of an adoptive son, I want to make this situation easier for kids and parents.

Weekly Meetings

It’s always great seeing residents of our district. This week, I was visited by Rochester area teachers, representatives with Cooperative Network, and members of the Goodwill Easter Seals! Thanks for all who stopped by!

Thanks to our local teachers for making the trip to St. Paul.

Deadline

The second committee deadline to hear bills took place today. That means we’ve been having longer committees to debate legislation. Following all the deadlines, we’ll have a better idea of where we’re headed regarding our state budget bills. During this important time, I hope you’ll contact me to share your thoughts on our proposals. It’s important for me to know where our district stands so I can better represent our area.

Feel free to call or email if you ever need anything. You can reach me via phone at 651-296-4378, or via email at rep.nels.pierson@house.mn.

Have a great weekend,
