I’m certainly encouraged by all the progress we’ve already made at the Capitol. Our third week just came to a close, and we’ve passed a tax relief bill, and, just yesterday, passed health care reform and relief legislation. Republicans in the House and Senate are working quickly for our state.
Health Care Bill Becomes Law
Yesterday, we sent our health care relief and reform bill, Senate File 1, to the governor’s desk where he signed it into law. This legislation is a victory for folks on the individual insurance market who’ve been hurt by skyrocketing premiums and deductibles.
Heading into this session, we knew it was past time to fix Obamacare’s ill effects on Minnesotans. Not only will our residents receive a significant reduction (25% for those who don’t qualify for tax credits) in their insurance premiums, they’ll see reforms to increase competition, choice, and access.
The relief was important, but so too were the reforms House Republicans fought to include. We worked quickly across party lines for struggling families, small business owners, farmers, and so many others around the state. I was pleased to see many House Democrats vote for these reforms as this bill passed on 108-19 vote.
This is an example of the Legislature working together for what’s right. There’s still more to do, but we started the first couple weeks of session on the right foot.
One of the best parts of the early weeks of session is meeting with constituents at my office. I spoke with a number of different groups over the last few days, including members of American Bikers for Awareness, Training, and Education (ABATE).
It was great to have my daughter Hannah come to the Capitol and experience what I do on a daily basis. I always believe it’s best to get our young folks involved in public policy and advocacy. Learning about local, state, or federal government is so useful later in life.
If you know of any young people interested in government, please let me know; I’d be happy to take them on a tour of the Capitol.
