Legislative Update: Avian Flu Outbreak

Friday, April 8, 2022

Avian Flu Outbreak

As many of you know, the outbreak of avian influenza throughout Minnesota has grown dramatically in recent days. Commercial and backyard flocks have been significantly affected across Minnesota and the country.

If you are concerned about your flock or suspect that avian influenza is spreading through your flock, contact your animal health officials immediately. In many cases, changes in water consumption in an affected animal is an early symptom. Furthermore, signs of quieter birds or a lack of energy or appetite may indicate avian flu.

Please see the below graphic for detailed information on protecting your flock.

Yesterday, the Minnesota House of Representatives passed legislation which included $1 million in funding to the Minnesota Department of Agriculture to address the changing situation. This money will primarily be used on testing materials and equipment that will assist local governments and counties in responding to the outbreak. The legislation passed by a vote of 129-1. I voted in favor of this bill, and I am glad that nearly every member of the Minnesota House voted for it as well.

If you want to stay updated on the how the avian flu is moving throughout our state and nation, please see the below link from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). This dashboard provides timely information on the size, location, and types of flocks that have been affected.

Avian influenza is not a disease that is known to spread to humans. Additionally, poultry with avian flu cannot be sold and is prohibited from entering the marketplace. As such, there is no food safety risk and poultry products remain safe.

Happy Easter!

Palm Sunday is just two days away, and the celebration of our Savior’s resurrection is right around the corner. Christ’s crucifixion on the cross and His triumph over death is the ultimate demonstration of His love for us. While we are sinners, Christ took our sins upon Himself, died, and rose again so that we might live.

He was not compelled to do this. He did not owe this to us. However, God’s only Son died on a cross to save us, the unrighteous, from the full penalty of our sin. We are not deserving of this salvation from everlasting fire, but He gave it to us anyway.

As we worship our Savior on Easter Sunday, let us celebrate His resurrection and thank God for the grace given to us.

Happy Easter! The Lord is risen indeed!
