LEGISLATIVE UPDATE FROM REP. TIM MILLER - DISTRICT 17-A

Monday, March 16, 2020

Hello, friends. I wanted to take this opportunity to update you on some of the recent news and activities here at the Minnesota State Capitol regarding the COVID-19 outbreak.

COVID-19: Staying Safe & Protecting Others

As many of you are aware, COVID-19 has spread rapidly across the United States. COVID-19 is a respiratory disease that is potentially lethal. Elderly people and individuals with compromised immune systems are especially vulnerable to this disease.

I believe it is important that we take COVID-19 very seriously. This is a disease that has killed many people across the world. We must take all necessary precautions; not just for our own health, but for the health of those around us. Despite the seriousness of this matter, I believe an attitude of calm is important.

There are many important steps to take to ensure that COVID-19 does not spread to you or others. First, wash your hands regularly. Second, refrain from touching your face (eyes, nose, mouth, etc.) as much as possible. Third, always cover a cough or a sneeze in the crook of your arm.

An essential method to ensure that COVID-19 does not spread to you or others is to practice social distancing. Canceling gatherings and get-togethers is recommended. Major events and small gatherings are being canceled across the country. Being in contact with others as little as possible is ideal. Furthermore, always remaining six feet away from people is an important step to keep COVID-19 from spreading.

Center for Disease Control & MN Department of Health

The Minnesota Department of Health and the Center for Disease Control have the most updated and important information regarding COVID-19.

Here is a link to helpful information from the Center from Disease Control (CDC) regarding COVID-19: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-nCoV/index.html

Additionally, here is a link to helpful information from the Minnesota Department of Health regarding COVID-19: https://www.health.state.mn.us/diseases/coronavirus/index.html

In response to the COVID-19 outbreak, the Minnesota Legislature and Minnesota Governor have taken several measures to stem the outbreak:

  • The legislature passed, and the governor signed a $20 million coronavirus response package. These funds will be used to help the Minnesota Department of Health rapidly respond to COVID-19.
  • Minnesota Governor Tim Walz has declared a peacetime state of emergency. This will give the Governor the necessary powers to ensure that public health is protected in an expedient manner.
  • The legislature has recessed indefinitely, and all legislative meetings have been canceled until further notice. However, the legislature does have the ability to reconvene to address immediate needs as they arise.
