LEGISLATIVE UPDATE FROM REP. TIM MILLER - DISTRICT 17-A

Monday, March 9, 2020

Hello, friends! It’s a new week, and I wanted to take this opportunity to update you on some of the recent activities here at the Minnesota State Capitol.

No “Miller Time” this week.

Miller Time will be back next week!

Paid Family Leave

On Thursday, the Minnesota House of Representatives voted on H.F. 5. This bill is a proposal which would provide paid family leave to families across Minnesota. While this bill seems like a nice, big-hearted idea, it is a proposal which would harm rural Minnesota.

Specifically, this bill places a $1.8 billion payroll tax on Minnesota businesses to provide paid family leave. Such a measure would severely harm small businesses. This bill was designed to cater to Minnesota’s suburbs and metro area. In the end, this bill adds to the growing burden that St. Paul places on greater Minnesota.

I voted against H.F. 5.

Bonding Bill Hearing

On Wednesday, I had the opportunity to present my bonding bill, H.F. 3020, to the House Capital Investment Committee. H.F. 3020 is a bill to construct a hydroelectric facility in Granite Falls. Additionally, the Capital Investment Committee is the committee that constructs this year’s bonding bill. Crystal Johnson, the City Manager for Granite Falls, joined me in presenting the bill. Fortunately, my bill was laid over for inclusion in the bonding bill. Hopefully we will get this passed into law!

FFA Model Committee

One of the highlights of last week was meeting with constituents from Future Farmers of America (FFA). These students visited the State Capitol to gain a better understanding of how our government operates. In addition to discussing agricultural issues, I was fortunate enough to chair a model committee which allowed the students greater insight to the legislative process. These students are our future, and FFA does a great job of setting up these students for success.

Criminal Justice Reform

This week I was a part of a bipartisan group of Representatives and Senators who started the Criminal Justice Reform Caucus here in the Minnesota Legislature. This group will meet to discuss both Republican and Democratic ideas regarding criminal justice policy solutions. I serve on the House Public Safety and Criminal Justice Reform Committee, and these issues are very important to me. I am excited to start a bipartisan discussion on commonsense issues that all legislators can support.
