IT'S TIME TO FIX MNSURE

Monday, November 2, 2015

Hello from St. Paul,

I'd like to offer my thanks to the folks at Friendship Homes and Ice Castle Fish Houses in Montevideo for hosting the Minnesota House Greater Minnesota Economic & Workforce Development Policy Committee and providing tours of their businesses

The committee has been traveling to all corners of Minnesota to learn more about any unique needs that are being experienced by job providers, and will utilize this information as it sets an agenda for the 2016 legislative session. It was important for committee members to hear a perspective from western Minnesota – in this case Montevideo – and our hosts really helped make this committee stop a success.

In other news, I have received a large number of emails and phone calls recently from local residents about the skyrocketing costs of health insurance in Minnesota, and it's clear the time has come for lawmakers to find an innovative solution to the Affordable Care Act and MNsure. In one instance, the person saw his monthly premium jump from $1500 to $2500.

Despite promises that both Obamacare and MNsure would reduce health care costs and health insurance premiums for millions of consumers, many people around the state and nation have experienced huge increases in what they're paying for health care.

I'm ready to work hard with Governor Dayton and any state lawmaker to find a health care solution that does not drain family budgets and threaten financial futures.

This is not a Democrat or Republican problem, it’s a Minnesota problem. It's time for all of us to put partisan politics aside on this issue and find a workable solution.

For starters, Senator Koenen and I will be hosting a listening session in Olivia next week to hear your stories about rising health care premiums. We also invited Minnesota House Health and Human Services Finance Committee Chairman Matt Dean to attend as well, and he has confirmed to me that he will attend.

The event will be held on Monday, November 16 at the BOLD High School Media Room, 701 S. 9th Street in Olivia, beginning at 6:30 p.m. Enter from the east side parking lot.

As chairman of the committee that funds health programs in Minnesota, Rep. Dean is one of the most knowledgeable leaders on health care issues in our state. Telling your personal experiences with rising health care premiums will be critical, and I strongly encourage you to take some time next Monday to attend the event and share your thoughts, opinions, and questions.

Finally, I'd like to wish those who are serving or have served our country in the past a happy Veterans Day. Having served in the Army Reserve myself, along with having a dad who fought in the Korean War, a brother who was in the Army, and a son who is currently in the National Guard, I am fully aware of the sacrifices our veterans have made in order to protect our freedoms.

To all veterans: your commitment to our nation's interests is deeply appreciated.

Talk to you soon,

Tim
