Area Reps. call for public to weigh in on mining proposal

ST. PAUL – A pair of state representatives from the region encourages area residents to express support for the NorthMet permit to mine proposal by participating in the DNR’s public comment period.
The 60-day window to provide the DNR with input on PolyMet’s proposed NorthMet mining project near Hoyt Lakes is now open and lasts until March 6.
“Now is the time to show our support for safe mining expansion in northern Minnesota,” said Rep. Sandy Layman, R-Cohasset. “I encourage our area to share their opinion on the PolyMet mine so we can provide good-paying jobs for countless Minnesotans.”
Public comments can be submitted a number of ways, including at Citizens also will be able to provide opinions at a pair of public meetings, Feb. 7 in Aurora and Feb. 8 in Duluth.
“Completing the permit to mine process will be a major step forward in creating new high-quality jobs for the next several generations of young people in our part of Minnesota.” said Rep. Dale Lueck, R-Aitkin. “Today, additional deposits of copper-nickel and special use precious minerals are being actively explored in Aitkin County. Successful completion of the extremely tough and detailed environmental review process by the NorthMet project opens the door to a bright future for our entire region. Please don’t hesitate to submit a comment on this important project.”
In addition to the permit to mine, the NorthMet project also would need a number of additional DNR permits, as well as several other state, federal and local permits and approvals.
