Statement from Rep. Dale Lueck on NorthMet EIS

Thursday, March 3, 2016

ST. PAUL – House Mining and Outdoor Recreation Policy Committee Vice Chairman Rep. Dale Lueck, R-Aitkin, issued the following statement following the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources' final environmental impact statement Thursday for a proposed NorthMet mine project in northeastern Minnesota. The DNR deemed the environmental impact statement "adequate," meaning the permitting process for Polymet can now proceed.

"This is great news that is long overdue," Lueck said. "This will allow us to move efficiently through the final stages of permitting and get new jobs up and running in our area. The stage is finally set for the mining industry to create new badly needed jobs. This another important step in putting ready-and-willing workers back to work in a region of Minnesota that really needs a lift."

The House Job Growth and Energy Affordability Committee will continue to discuss short- and long-term economic efforts on the Iron Range during a meeting today's committee hearing in Room 5 of the State Office Building.
