Prairie View Grand Opening

Friday, September 8, 2017

Dear Neighbor,

I hope you had a great summer! As students return to school we can all look forward to the return of schedules and daily routines for us as well. Please pray for protection and perseverance for those in Texas, Florida, and other areas impacted by the devastation caused by hurricanes Harvey and Irma. Much work lies ahead as people begin rebuilding their lives.

PRAIRIE VIEW GRAND OPENING

It was an exciting time attending the ribbon cutting ceremony Thursday this week for the grand opening of the newly constructed Prairie View Elementary and Middle School located in Otsego. Prairie View is part of ISD 728, Elk River School District and Kari Sampson is the new principal! Construction of the new school highlights the tremendous growth our community continues to experience.

2ND AMENDMENT

Monday this week Gov. Kenneth Mapp of the U.S. Virgin Islands signed an emergency order permitting the seizure of private property guns and ammunition in advance of Hurricane Irma. In 2005 similar actions were witnessed in New Orleans in the wake of Hurricane Katrina when local law enforcement performed door-to-door gun confiscations from the homes of law abiding citizens and from some evacuees. It is very unfortunate some in government perpetuate the faulty premise confiscating guns and ammo in the name of security somehow makes society safer.

Disarming law abiding citizens preventing them from protecting themselves should never happen. Actions such as the above highlight the importance of ensuring natural disasters and other times of emergency not be leveraged as excuses to violate the Constitutional Rights of law abiding citizens. It's for this reason I was proud to co-author HF 722, the bill passed and signed into law in 2015 as part of the Public Safety Omnibus bill, to prevent this very thing from happening in Minnesota.
