Rep. Eric Lucero (30B) - Legislative Update

Friday, March 25, 2016

Above is a photo from a press conference I participated in Wednesday where a mix of House and Senate members and concerned citizens and parents discussed bathroom/locker room privacy legislation.

Dear Neighbor,

As we enter into the Easter weekend please keep the victims of the latest Islamic attack in Brussels in your prayers. On the home front, below are several highlights from the Capitol this week.

Bathroom/Locker Room Privacy Bill

I am co-author of a bill introduced this week seeking to protect the physical safety and privacy of children and women by requiring men and women use the bathroom/locker room matching their biological sex. This bill is the result of misguided policies at certain local levels that would allow a male who identifies as a female to enter a girls’ bathroom/locker room.

Minnesotans overwhelmingly agree the demand by some to allow men to use women's bathrooms/locker rooms shocks the conscience and defies common sense. It’s for this reason many concerned citizens from our community and across Minnesota have expressed how shocking it is that in the year 2016 some are working against the protection of the physical safety and privacy of children and women.

There are some who are gender confused and for them it is our obligation to offer nothing less than our love and compassion. The correct solution for the gender confused is to make available family or unisex bathrooms/changing rooms so as to protect the physical safety and privacy of children and women.

Lead Shot

In the Mining and Outdoor Recreation Committee we heard a bill to prevent the DNR from further restricting the use of lead shot in wildlife management areas in some parts of the state. Previous attempts at banning lead have come before the Legislature and failed to pass. This issue is certainly related to protecting our Second Amendment rights, which is why I voted in favor of the bill to stop the DNR's proposal sending the bill to the next House committee.

Appleton Prison

In the Public Safety Committee we heard a bill directing the MN Dept. of Corrections to (DOC) lease space from a privately held prison located in Appleton, MN.  Minnesota has a severe overpopulation problem with a current shortage of 562 prison beds resulting in detainees being housed in county jails. County jails are under-equipped to handle detainees serving longer-term prison sentences and thrusts additional costs to taxpayers at the county level. The bill would alleviate the shortage by making available space for an additional 1,600 detainees. I voted in favor of the bill sending the bill to the next House committee.

Many blessings as you and your family this Easter weekend!

Sincerely,

Rep. Eric Lucero
