Koznick Connection: Legislative Update (March 7, 2017)

Tuesday, March 7, 2017

Dear Lakeville Friends,

Greetings from St. Paul. It’s hard to believe it’s already March!  After two fast months in session, we continue to have full calendars and are diligent in committees, hearing many bill ideas as the first committee deadline approaches. It’s our version of March Madness.

Budget Surplus

Last Tuesday, it was announced that Minnesota is predicted to have a $1.65 billion budget surplus. Now that we know we have a continuing surplus, it’s important to work towards meaningful middle class tax relief.  We will create a fiscally responsible budget that keeps our state functioning, but within its means. As a member of the Taxes Committee, we’ve been working on bills to provide broad tax relief for hardworking Minnesotans.  All committees will begin building their budgets based off this most recent forecast and the individual committee budget “targets”.

My Bills

I introduced five bills on Wednesday on a variety of different topics dealing mostly with transportation. The most interesting piece of legislation would make commuting easier for Minnesota’s veterans. The bill would allow for veterans who have veteran’s license plates to use the express lanes on our highways without the toll fee. This is an idea from a constituent, and is a small gesture and thank you to all men and women who have served our country. I’ll update more on them as they proceed.

Mr. Speaker?

Last week, during a lengthy debate, I was fortunate to fill in as Speaker of the House for a short time. I have to say, It was pretty neat to have the responsibility of the chamber; I was thankful for the opportunity. Here’s a picture of me at the podium during the debate. Please know that I consider it a deep honor to be serving here. I strive to put partisanship aside, hear all ideas and work to make this state better.

Local Sports

Congratulations to both our Lakeville boys hockey teams for making it to the sectional finals. South prevailed in last week’s game and is headed to the State Tourney this week. It’s always a fun time of year that makes us proud of all the fine student-athletes!

Have a great week!
