Legislative Update from Rep. Brian Daniels

Thursday, February 07, 2019

Dear Neighbors,

It’s been another busy week in St. Paul and been I’ve been working on a few pieces of legislation that will make a positive impact in the lives of Minnesota and help keep our roads safer.

The first bill would provide licensing for certain music therapy providers that offer treatment for autistic children. I have been visited by a number of supporters of this legislation that have shared their personal stories about how music therapy has completely changed the lives of their children.

Music therapy can be very expensive—bringing enormous economic stress to families that are seeking this type of treatment for their children. By licensing these providers, we can set them on a path for being covered by insurance providers meaning that families will be able to pay a substantially lower price for this type of therapy.

I am still waiting to have the legislation drafted, so there are details that are waiting to be worked out, but I am encouraged by this bill’s potential.

In addition to this bill, I am also working on legislation that would increase penalties for driving after revocation.

Current statute says that driving after revocation is a misdemeanor regardless of the number of times you break the law. My bill would increase the penalties for driving after revocation to a gross misdemeanor if:

  • The driver has 4 prior driving after revocation convictions in a year
  • The driver has 3 prior driving convictions in one month

Like the last bill, this bill also has yet to be drafted. I will likely tweak some components of the bill before introducing it, but the information above is the general gist of what I’m trying to accomplish. Ultimately, the goal is to make sure that folks that have a revoked license stay off the road.

Please be sure to contact me to share any questions or concerns you may have about anything related to state government. I can be reached by phone at 651-296-8237 or via email at rep.brian.daniels@house.mn. It would be great to speak with you!

Have a great weekend,

Brian
