RELEASE: Rep. Considine cheers bipartisan legislative approval of Highway 14 package

Wednesday, March 18, 2020

SAINT PAUL – Early Tuesday morning, legislation to fund the four-lane expansion of Highway 14 from Nicollet to New Ulm passed through both chambers of the Minnesota Legislature. The legislation would allow the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) to apply for a $36 million federal Transportation Infrastructure Finance and Innovation Act (TIFIA) loan for Highway 14, administered through the Rural Project Initiative and Build America Bureau of the U.S. Department of Transportation.

State Rep. Jack Considine (DFL – Mankato) issued the following statement:

“Too many families have experienced heartbreak as a result of crashes on Highway 14, and this funding is long overdue to protect folks who travel this stretch of road. I’m thankful for Governor Walz and MnDOT Commissioner Margaret Anderson Kelliher for helping to put this solution before us. I’m also incredibly proud of the local leaders who have worked tirelessly for decades to make this a reality, especially Rep. Jeff Brand and Sen. Nick Frentz, who have poured their hearts and souls into delivering this critical funding. Personally, I’ve made many trips to Washington, D.C. lobbying for these improvements since 1999. I’m hopeful federal transportation officials will quickly approve the project and construction can get underway soon.”

Tuesday night, Governor Walz signed the legislation into law.
