Updated state budget forecast: $900 million surplus

Considine looks for investments to continue economic growth

St. Paul, Minn. – Today, officials from the Minnesota Management and Budget office announced the February Economic Forecast, which projects a state budget surplus of $900 million for fiscal years 2016-17. This is down from the $1.2 billion forecast in December, and Rep. Jack Considine (DFL – Mankato) says this is why the coming legislative session should focus on building an economy that works for all Minnesotans.

“This news shows that while our economy is still headed in the right direction, it highlights the need to make investments benefitting families and small businesses,” Considine said. “Folks are counting on improved broadband, tackling student debt, and a comprehensive transportation bill, and I think we’re in a sound position to move forward on these issues.”

Considine also renewed his support for the “Greater Minnesota for All” agenda, a package of bills including investments in broadband, transportation, property tax relief, job training and care for seniors with dementia.

“In my view, as our economy grows, but is doing so more slowly, this is the perfect time to level the playing field so that Minnesotans all over the state, including here in Greater Minnesota, can have the tools they need to succeed,” Considine said. “I’m committed working on a fair budget for ordinary Minnesotans, and such a budget must be reflective of these priorities.”

The 2016 session convenes on March 8, and is expected to last about 10 weeks. Considine invites constituents to contact him at 651-296-3248 or rep.jack.considine@house.mn.
