News from Rep. Peggy Bennett 7-22-2016

Friday, July 22, 2016

Dear Neighbors,

It’s been almost two months since the end of the legislative session, but things are continuing to stay very busy and exciting in our area. I wanted to send out one last legislative update before a 60-day, post-session rule kicks in tomorrow that says we can’t send out updates over the next few months. Although I can’t reach out to you, I hope you’ll continue to contact my office with any ways I can help you or your family.

Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony

Last weekend, the city of Hayward had a special ribbon-cutting ceremony for their end of the Blazing Star Bike Trail. Hayward Mayor Mike Hansen, bike committee members, the DNR, local pastor Joshua Enderson, and others took part. If you haven't had a chance to stop out and see this trail, take the time to check it out. Hayward has built a wonderful park and restroom building there.

The Blazing Star trail is a beautiful trail that is still missing a small bridge to make this segment from the City of Albert Lea to Hayward complete. I have met with DNR officials at the state level about this and will continue to do so until we get this trail completed. It's been a very long process, with many local people who have worked hard on this project. It definitely deserves to be completed!

Promoting Reading

On Tuesday, I brought my dog Colter to the Albert Lea Public Library to demonstrate Colter’s reading ability, and the importance of reading for our young learners. We had a great turnout, and I could see the kids were really interested and motivated to read more (even if they’re enjoying summer break right now). Thank you to librarian Patty Greibrok for inviting Colter and me to take part in this great program at the children's library!

Court Visit

Yesterday, Judge Jill Flaskamp Halbrooks, with the Minnesota Court of Appeals, gave me a tour of the judicial building, allowed me to observe her court in action, and patiently answered my many curious questions about the Court of Appeals and the judicial process. I've always wanted to learn more about the judicial branch of government, so this was great fun for me.

Special Session Update

Last week, legislative leaders met with the governor to continue discussions about a possible special session. While it’s still unknown if we will have a special session, I’m hopeful we can come together and re-pass our bills to provide middle-class tax relief and needed road and bridge funding.

Thank You

Thank you for your calls, emails, and visits. Again, please continue to call or email my office if you need anything over the summer. I love hearing your views and suggestions, and will get back to you as soon as possible. Please stay in touch!

Have a great summer,

Peggy
