RELEASE: House to Attempt Veto Override of Deputy Registrar Reimbursement Legislation

Sunday, May 20, 2018

SAINT PAUL, MN – On Sunday, House Republicans will attempt to override Governor Mark Dayton’s veto of a bill to provide $9 million of aid to deputy registrars to help offset the numerous costs incurred following the rollout of the state’s vehicle licensing system, MNLARS. The bill, HF2835, passed on wide bipartisan votes in the legislature; 101-19 in the House and 46-20 in the Senate.

“We saw such wide bipartisan support in the legislature for this bill because our deputy registrars are crying out for help, and both sides of the aisle know how important these funds are for struggling registrars,” said bill author Rep. Dave Baker, R-Willmar. “This is an issue where we can all put politics aside and help right one of the many wrongs caused by the rollout of MNLARS.”

“Throughout this session, the governor has asked for ‘clean,’ standalone bills, and we delivered one with great bipartisan support from the House of Representatives, that was vetoed – not because of its content – but because of what it didn’t contain,” said Rep. Jim Nash, R-Waconia. “We’re disappointed by this decision, and hope to override the veto to get these badly needed funds to our deputy registrars.”
