Legislative Update from Rep. Jeff Backer

Friday, February 16, 2024

Dear Neighbors,

The 2024 legislative session is officially underway, and it is an honor to return to the legislature to continue my work fighting for the men, women, and families of West Central Minnesota.

Last year, we saw the consequences of one-party control in St. Paul as Democrats blew through a $17.5 billion budget surplus, raised taxes by $10 billion, and passed a variety of controversial policies that have divided Minnesota. Now, we’re already hearing about several new and divisive pieces of legislation that Democrats plan to push this year including a proposal to turn Minnesota into a sanctuary state and to legalize physician-assisted suicide.

It’s clearer than ever that balance is needed in St. Paul. I will continue to hold the line on these radical policies and uphold life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

School Resource Officers

Democrats have delayed, yet again, a fix to the School Resource Officer law. This is not the “fast track” they promised.

Schools, students, and law enforcement have been waiting for months to find a resolution that returns SROs to their posts ensuring school safety. I will continue working until a real fix is passed and 100% of SROs are back in schools.

Stop the Dig

Last session, Democrats blew through the state's historic $17.5 billion budget surplus, grew government spending by 40%, and raised taxes on every Minnesotans by $10 billion.

No project better exemplifies their total disregard for your tax dollars than the $730 million State Office Building renovation and expansion.

This is money that should have been returned to you through tax relief, not spent on a palace for politicians.
