RELEASE: Backer Takes Oath of Office, Announces Committee Assignments for 2023-2024 Legislative Session

Tuesday, January 3, 2023

St. Paul, MN– Minnesota’s 2023 Legislative Session officially began January 3rd as Rep. Jeff Backer, R-Browns Valley, and 133 other state representatives took the oath of office during a ceremony at the State Capitol in St. Paul.

“I am looking forward to another year representing you, your family, and our communities in St. Paul,” Backer said. “It’s sure to be a busy year as much of our work will be dominated by the state’s $17.5 billion budget surplus and setting a new two-year state budget. As for myself, I will do everything I can to return the surplus back to you through permanent tax relief and advocate for a responsible budget that funds your priorities while keeping the size of government in check.”

Most of Rep. Backer’s work during the first months of session will take place in House committees. For the 2023-2024 legislative biennium, Backer will serve as the Republican-lead on the Legacy Finance Committee. He has also been assigned to both the Health Finance and Policy Committee and the Human Services Policy Committee.

Backer continued, "I will be a strong proponent of re-funding our law enforcement professionals, eliminating social security taxes for senior citizens, and investing in quality care facilities for our elderly communities"

Backer encourages area residents to contact him if they have any legislative questions, concerns, or ideas. He can be reached by phone at 651-296-4929 or via text and call at 701-361-1909.
