Legislative Update from Rep. Jeff Backer

Friday, May 20, 2022

Dear Neighbors,

We are heading into the final weekend of the 2022 legislative session, and I am working hard to make sure that the state’s historic budget surplus is returned to you and your family. Unfortunately, House Democrats and Gov. Walz are demanding billion-dollar increases in spending in exchange for tax cuts.

If Democrats get their way, it will result in a more than 15% increase in spending compared to the previous budget — that's more than Democrats last spent when they had complete control of State Government. This is unacceptable at a time when state government is already fully funded thanks to last year’s budget agreement and when Minnesota saw nearly $80 billion come into the state via federal COVID relief aid during the pandemic.

With a record-setting surplus, I want to see more tax relief and am opposed to the massive spending increases that House Democrats and Gov. Walz are demanding.

Stay tuned for more information early next week after the 2022 legislative session ends.
