Capitol Update from Rep. Tama Theis

Friday, April 26, 2019

Dear Neighbors,

Here’s the latest news from the Capitol:

This week, we have been hearing omnibus budget bills every day. So far, K-12 Education, Jobs and Energy, Health and Human Services, and Agriculture and Housing have passed, mostly along party lines. Some of the most harmful provisions came in the Health and Human Services bill, which contained both an increase in taxes on doctor visits, medical procedures, and more, as well as a $68 million cut to nursing homes across the state. I voted no, to protect our family budgets and our nursing homes.

Today we anticipate also hearing the Transportation bill, which contains a 70% gas tax increase, and next week we will hear the State Government, Higher Education, Public Safety, and Environment bills. Across all of the DFL omnibus bills, there are over $12 billion in tax increases. At a time when we have over a billion dollar surplus, it is absolutely unconscionable that Democrats are both raising taxes and cutting nursing homes.

Here is a photo of Rep. Lucero, Rep. Kiel, and I during the debate on the Health and Human Services bill.

It’s an honor to be your voice at the Capitol. Have a wonderful weekend!

Sincerely,

Tama
