Capitol Update from Rep. Tama Theis

Friday, April 13, 2018

Dear Neighbors,

Here is an update from your Capitol.

Electrolux Worker Retraining Bill

Legislation I am co-authoring in the House would provide $650,000 in funding to help retrain dislocated Electrolux employees. The funding would go to Career Solutions of St. Cloud, who would help retrain folks in areas including computer literacy, GED achievement, and manufacturing and construction trades training.

With Electrolux set to close in 2019, we want to give folks as much time as possible to get great training and help these dislocated workers prepare for the next steps of their career.

The bill received its first hearing this week, and I hope we can get it signed into law.

Sanneh Foundation Bill

Legislation I am carrying to provide the Sanneh Foundation with an additional $1.5 million for programming in fiscal year 2019 received a hearing in the Education Finance Committee on Thursday. The Sanneh Foundation does great work for kids, providing all-day, in-school and after-school programs for academic and behavioral interventions, focusing on helping underserved students of color and students from low-income families.

Expanding the funding for this programming would help them bring more services to the St. Cloud community.

Doula Legislation

Another bill heard this week in the Health and Human Services Finance Committee is House File 2178, legislation I am authoring to establish MA reimbursement rates for Doula services. Doula services provide prenatal and postpartum care for women, and I think this is a proposal that can help to ensure better outcomes for many new mothers and their babies.
