MACK, ZERWAS STATEMENT ON DAYTON SEX OFFENDER DECISION

Wednesday, November 13, 2013

ST. PAUL – House Assistant Republican Leader Tara Mack (R-Apple Valley) and Rep. Nick Zerwas (R-Elk River) released the following statement on Governor Mark Dayton’s decision regarding the Minnesota Sex Offender Program (MSOP). While Governor Dayton announced the suspension of future provisional discharges from MSOP, he reaffirmed his support for the release of Thomas Duvall and other sex offenders who have filed a petition for release and are currently waiting for their cases to be heard before the Supreme Court Appeals Panel.

"As a public servant, my number one priority is to keep our kids and our communities safe. Today's announcement from Governor Dayton, saying he supports the release of violent sex offenders against the advice of the Minnesota Attorney General, is alarming to me as a legislator and a mom," said Rep. Mack.

“I’m shocked Governor Dayton doubled down on his position to support the provisional release of dangerous serial rapists like Thomas Duvall,” said Rep. Zerwas. “Like the Attorney General, I continue to oppose this dangerous sex offender’s release into our neighborhoods.”

Rep. Mack and Rep. Zerwas both serve on the House Health and Human Services Policy and Finance Committees.
