SAINT PAUL, MN – On Tuesday, Rep. Nick Zerwas, R-Elk River, passed his bill, HF390, on a bipartisan vote of 71-55. The legislation increases penalties for those convicted of blocking access to a highway, an airport, or public transit.
“This is a simple bill that helps increase the safety of the public, without infringing on First Amendment rights,” said Zerwas. “Shutting down a highway or blocking access to an airport is already illegal, and I think the risk these actions pose for the public require increased penalties for guilty parties. On multiple occasions, Governor Dayton has expressed his support of increasing penalties for those blocking a highway or access to an airport, and I’m hopeful we can work together to get a bill signed into law that keeps law enforcement and every-day Minnesotans safer.”
Now passed by the House, the bill heads to the Senate.
