Legislative Update: REAL ID Update & Local Elections Today

Friday, November 3, 2017

Friends,

After a warm and wet start to fall, the cold moved in just in time for Halloween. I hope you and your family had a fun and safe time trick-or-treating! Also, I hope hunters had a successful and safe deer opener this past weekend. Have fun and be safe out there.

Local School Elections

Don't forget to vote in your local election TODAY Tuesday, November 7. Some details on the elections are available here:

REAL ID Update & MNLARS

Last month we received more good news that Minnesota has been granted a grace period by the Department of Homeland Security that will ensure Minnesota drivers licenses can continue to be used to board airplanes and enter federal buildings until at least October 10, 2018. Earlier in October Minnesota was granted an extension until January of 2018.

The focus now shifts to the troubled MNLARS system, the new computer system that the state is using to issue IDs, tabs, and more, to ensure the implementation of the REAL ID law moves forward. Minnesota must be actively distributing REAL IDs by October 10, 2018 or another extension will be needed.

There has been extensive reporting by KSTP and others regarding the struggles of MNLARS. This must be fixed and to help that, if you run into problems when renewing tabs or transferring titles, please use this form to submit the details of the issue. It's disappointing to see these struggles continue and we will definitely look into how this can be prevented in the future.

High School Page Program

The Minnesota House of Representatives High School Page Program is now accepting applications. Over the last 40 years the program has provided high school juniors with hands-on access to our state government in action. I encourage any high school junior who may be interested in learning more about the legislative process to apply for the page program by December 1st. Click here to apply
