COVID-19 Update - November 19, 2020

Thursday, November 19, 2020

Dear Neighbors,

I hope this email finds you and your family safe and healthy. Last night, Governor Tim Walz announced a new set of public health guidelines aimed at combating COVID-19. Starting Friday at 11:59 p.m., bars and restaurants will only be open through take-out options, gyms and entertainment venues will close, and we’ll be putting a pause on youth sports.

Pausing for COVID

COVID-19’s impact is real, harsh, and increasingly widespread. News of a vaccine is promising, but aggressive action is necessary at this point in time. Hospitals are running out of space, with critical care beds at a premium. This graphic illustrates how dire the problem is for patients (including those who need care for conditions other than COVID) and health care workers alike:

Tragically, as of yesterday, over 3,000 people in our state have died due to COVID. This is another difficult decision for the Governor, but it’s clear he’s putting the health and safety of Minnesotans at the forefront.

We also can’t ignore the impact this dial-back will have on businesses, many of which are already barely hanging on. They need financial assistance, and they need it now. It’s time for the federal government to do its job and deliver the relief small businesses, families, and communities are all counting on. Please support your favorite restaurants by getting a takeout meal when you’re able or getting a gift card.

Now more than ever, it’s critical to follow key safety precautions: wash your hands often, avoid large gatherings, practice social distancing, and wear a mask around others. Also, if you think you need one, get a test. There are several new options for getting tested for COVID-19, including a take home version. If you have symptoms or have come in contact with someone with COVID-19, you should get tested. If you do not have symptoms, it is best to get tested at least five days after the last time you were close to a person with COVID-19. With the surge in cases, note that it can take several days to get your results.

The DECC in Duluth has saliva testing available every day. You can find more information on testing options here.

I hope you and your family have a safe and enjoyable Thanksgiving holiday. It’s difficult that due to COVID-19, we have to avoid large, festive gatherings this year, but nothing is more important than protecting one another.

As always, feel free to reach out to me if I can be of help at 651-296-4308 or rep.mike.sundin@house.mn. It’s an honor to represent you.

Sincerely,

Mike Sundin
