Legislative Update

Monday, April 1, 2019

Dear Neighbor,

Here’s the latest news from St. Paul.

Swearing In

As you may remember, Governor Walz chose Democrat Senator Tony Lourey as DHS commissioner when he took office, so there have now been two special elections. Jason Rarick, formerly the Representative from District 11B, flipped that seat so the Senate now has a three vote margin for the Republican majority, making the Senate more stable for those who care about conservative issues. The swearing in of Senator Rarick left an opening in the House, and on Wednesday, Republican Nathan Nelson was sworn in from District 11B, bringing the Legislature back up to full strength. Below are some photos from the swearing-in of Senator Rarick and Representative Nelson.

Committees

Next Friday, April 12th, is the third deadline here at the Legislature. Of my committees, Corrections and Commerce have finished hearing bills, and Judiciary, Public Safety, and Taxes are getting started on their omnibus bills this week. Things are going to be very busy here over the next few weeks as committees finish their work, and I hope that the bill authors keep Minnesota taxpayers in mind as they assemble their budget bills.

Governor’s Reception

I am honored to be invited to attend a reception at the Governor’s mansion for Israel’s ambassador to the United States this evening. I’m looking forward to visiting with Ambassador Dermer!
