RELEASE: Rep. Lien statement on $1.4 billion budget surplus

Friday, December 2, 2016

St. Paul, Minn. – Today, the Office of Minnesota Management and Budget released the November Economic Forecast which projects a budget surplus of $1.4 billion. The current two-year budget period is set to end with $684 million leftover, after a $334 million is sent to the state budget reserve, as mandated by law.

State Rep. Ben Lien (DFL – Moorhead) released the following statement:

"This budget forecast continues to be good news for Minnesota's fiscal health. Along with improved credit ratings our state received earlier this year and overall job growth, Minnesota's economy remains strong.

"With a possible special session and upcoming regular session we must use these financial resources wisely to address health care, higher education affordability and agricultural property taxes. Ultimately, we must make sure we shape a state budget that keeps our economy growing.”

Rep. Lien represents the communities of Moorhead and Oakport Township in the Minnesota House. He can be reached at 651-296-5515 or at rep.ben.lien@house.mn.
