News from Representative Kresha 03-07-2014

Dear Neighbors,

The signs of Spring are all around: state tournaments are in full swing, fish houses are off the lakes, daylight savings is this weekend, lent has begun, and the legislature is in full swing. The promise of warmer weather is forecasted and soon seeds will be looking for homes in the soil.

1.2 billion projected surplus
The combination of increased manufacturing, efficient government reductions in 2010 and 2011, and large tax increases of 2013 have resulted in a projected 1.2 billion dollar surplus. There is no question the surplus is good news for Minnesotans who have endured some of the most difficult times. However, as a legislator who is looking ahead to make sure the State stays on stable ground, I believe we need to choose wisely on our investment path going forward.

Transportation, broadband, long-term care, and education are the foundation of tomorrow's generation. Opportunity not entitlements will help our next leaders move the country forward.

Employment Enterprises
One of the groups making a difference in our area is the Employment Enterprises organization. They took a day to spend some time at the Capitol and stop by the office, and I continue to support legislation to assist this group.

Early Education Scholarships
I am working with Rep. Pam Myrha on a scholarships bill that will remove the arbitrary cap on scholarships and make sure the under served areas of the state are getting equal access to early learning opportunities. Todd and Morrison county have not had the same opportunities for early learning scholarships as the metro, and I am working to equalize that issue.

Farm to Food Shelf
One of the highlights of the week was a bill in Ag Policy that easily passed allowing farmers to get reimbursed for harvesting costs if they donate food to the food shelf. The idea is to assist our food shelf when there is an available supply of fresh fruits and vegetables.

I hope you find the updates helpful and remember you can contact me anytime with questions or concerns.

Cheers!
