Kresha Saves Motorists Money

Thursday, March 10, 2022

St. Paul – Representative Ron Kresha (R-Little Falls) is committed to saving Minnesotans money, especially when it comes to big-ticket purchases like vehicles. His latest bill would establish a temporary halt on vehicle registration tax fees for the first 24 months after purchase.

“Gas prices are climbing. The price of used vehicles has yet to fall to pre-pandemic levels. People need some savings when it comes to their cars,” Kresha said.

The legislation would allow for all new and used vehicles first registered in Minnesota between July 2022 and June 30, 2024, the vehicle registration tax is waived for 24 months. For any motor vehicle registration renewals due after July 1, 2022, and before June 30, 2024, the vehicle registration is extended for 24 months, and the vehicle registration tax is waived for 24 months.

Vehicle registration tax in Minnesota is 6.5% of the vehicle purchasing price. A lower tax rate is applied to older vehicles.

As part of this legislation, wheelage tax would also be waived for 24 months.
