Legislative Update from Representative Brian Johnson

Thursday, March 17, 2022

Friends,

Another big week in the legislature has passed us by. This week, I was hopeful that the House Democrats would pass the Unemployment Insurance Trust Fund legislation. This bill had support from the governor, the Senate and House Republicans.

The House Republicans asked for this bill to once again be heard on the House Floor. The Democrats would not hear it. We have missed the March 15 deadline and now, our businesses will have to suffer the consequences of higher taxes for the next six years. My heart is heavy for all of our hardworking job creators.

I signed off on some legislation this week that I believe will make Minnesota a better place. I supported the Bail Abatement Nonprofit Exclusion Act. I was in law enforcement for more than 27 years. Criminals need to take personal responsibility for their actions and that includes paying bail.

I support the bill eliminating the Minnesota Sentencing Guidelines Commission and replacing it with the Minnesota Sentencing Data Office. We need a better understanding of our justice system and what is working and what is not. For too long, we have dealt with folks just wanting to make the rules and keep the public in the dark.

Finally, I support HF4239. This bill would allow a patient to have a support person by their side while they are receiving treatment. It is paramount that patients, receiving treatment and going through their toughest times, be able to have a friend or family member hold their hand through it.

I love hearing from you and I appreciate you sharing any concerns you may have. Thank you for all of your support as we continue through session.
