Legislative Update

Friday, March 16, 2018

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

Here is an update with the latest news from the Capitol in St. Paul.

Hands-Free Bill

In the Public Safety Committee on Tuesday, we approved legislation that takes action against distracted driving by banning handheld cell phone and device use when operating a motor vehicle.  The bill would require any cell phones to be used in a voice-activated or hands-free mode.  The committee also heard public testimony from people who have lost loved ones in tragic car accidents caused by distracted drivers.  This is an important bill that, if enacted, would be a strong step in protecting innocent drivers from these tragedies, and would ultimately save lives.  I will be sure to keep you updated as it continues its way through the legislative process.

State of the State Address

Wednesday evening, Governor Dayton gave his final State of the State Address.  Last session, we worked with the Governor to provide the largest tax relief bill in 20 years as well as the largest investment ever in roads and bridges without a tax increase.  I am optimistic that the legislature can continue working with him this session in order to build on last year’s historic accomplishments.

MNsure Tax Reduction

My colleagues and I are continuing our efforts to lower health care costs and last week a bill that would reduce the MNsure tax from 3.5 percent to 2 percent was introduced.  This reduction is expected to save Minnesotans $30 million.  The bill also does away with active purchasers to increase options on the MNsure exchange and seeks a waiver allowing people receiving tax credits to purchase insurance outside the MNsure exchange.  Decreasing this burdensome tax will be an important part of further lowering healthcare costs for Minnesota’s families this year.
