Legislative Update - January 17, 2017

Tuesday, January 17, 2017

Dear Neighbors,

On January 3rd I was sworn in again as your State Representative. It’s an incredible privilege and honor to act as your voice at the Capitol. Here are a few items from my first days back in office:

Assistance for Homeless Families in Eagan

The weather has been terribly cold these last two weeks, and in response to community need, Easter by the Lake in Eagan (4545 Pilot Knob Road; corner of Pilot Knob and Cliff Rd) has been hosting a temporary homeless shelter. The shelter is for Dakota County families and adults (age 18+).

While the temporary shelter is closing on Friday, January 20 at 12:00pm, there is still assistance available for those in need. Anyone in need of shelter should contact the Housing Crisis Line (651) 554-5751 and select option 1 for further information, up-to-date details, and referrals to shelter resources.

First Weeks Activities

Back at the Capitol, we jumped right back in. I’ve been busy attending committee meetings, floor sessions, and meeting with constituent groups.

Health Insurance Premium Relief

I recently presented Governor Dayton’s plan to provide immediate relief to the 125,000 Minnesotans who are facing increasing insurance premiums on the individual market. This proposal, originally agreed to by a bipartisan group of legislative leaders, would provide a 25% rebate for their premiums. It’s important that we get this done immediately because families are searching for the best plan before the January 31st deadline. In addition, I’m working on proposals to provide long-term solutions to stabilize the individual market and make insurance more affordable. I’m hopeful we can pass effective relief the Governor will be able to sign as soon as possible.

Sunday Liquor Sales

After hearing concerns from small business owners, I’ve been encouraging advocates to work with businesses to find a compromise. While all sides aren’t 100% happy, it sounds as if a compromise has been reached. The compromise, which is to set limited statewide Sunday sales hours and to not have deliveries, will be up for a vote in committee later today. I plan on voting yes as long as nothing substantive changes.

Visit the Newly Restored Capitol

The Minnesota Capitol is one of the most spectacular state capitol buildings in the country. After a two year renovation, the century old building is as beautiful as it was the day it was first opened. Even if you’ve visited before, it’s worth coming to see again.

The Capitol is open seven days a week. Free 45-minute tours are available daily and start on the hour. They leave from the Information Center in Room 126. If you have a larger group, you can schedule a tour by emailing grouptickets@mnhs.org or calling 651-259-3003. For K-12 Field Trips, visit mnhs.org/fieldtriprequest or call 1-800-387-5008.
