ST. PAUL, MN – For the second straight year, the League of Minnesota Cities named State Representative Peter Fischer (DFL – Maplewood) a ‘Distinguished Legislator’ for his work to ensure sustainable water supplies for Minnesota residents and businesses.
In a letter to Fischer, the League of Minnesota Cities said the following:
“Thank you for your work with the League to focus state efforts on addressing groundwater supply issues in ways that avoid unintended consequences for city residents and businesses. Furthermore, thank you for working on specific legislation to reinstate the legislative water commission, reduce permit fees on stormwater projects, and improve city representation on groundwater management advisory groups to make water policy implementation better for Minnesota cities.”
Fischer is the recipient of the ‘Distinguished Legislator’ award each of his first two years in office. His legislative district (43A) includes White Bear Lake – ground zero in the battle to protect Minnesota’s water resources.
“White Bear Lake is the canary in the coal mine – it’s a dire example of what could happen around the state if we don’t take action,” said Fischer. “Restoring White Bear Lake and preventing water shortages in the northeast metropolitan region has been one of my top priorities since taking office in January 2013. I’m honored to be recognized for my work on this issue.”
Upon taking office, Fischer quickly gained a reputation as a hard-working, collaborative and thoughtful legislator. When it comes to his work on water sustainability, Fischer says he is especially proud of his ability to unite a diverse range of stakeholders around common goals. He holds regular meetings with constituents, the private sector, state agencies, and local and state elected officials to provide updates, gather feedback and answer questions.
