Above is a photo taken at Oak Grove Cemetery during Friday's Wreaths Across America event in Detroit Lakes. Oak Grove was the last of three stops, following Veterans Memorial Park and Grand Army of the Republic Park.

Neighbors,

The holidays are fast approaching, and I would like to take a moment to wish you and your family a Merry Christmas and a happy new year. I hope you are able to spend the holidays with loved ones as we celebrate the birth of Christ. Also, if you’re traveling during the holidays, please be extra safe out on the roads.

I recently had the great honor of attending a Wreaths Across America event in Detroit Lakes. This Detroit Lakes tradition began in 2015 as a way to honor veterans during the holiday season. It is one of only a few such celebrations in Minnesota. The main mission of Wreaths Across America is to remember, honor and teach the legacy of the brave men and women of our armed forces. Each wreath includes 10 balsam bouquets, representing the 10 special qualities our veterans embody:

  1. Their belief in a greater good
  2. Their love for each other
  3. Their strength, work ethic and character
  4. Their honesty and integrity,
  5. Their humility, selflessness and modesty
  6. Their ambitions and aspirations
  7. Their optimism for America
  8. Their concern for the future
  9. Their pride in their duties
  10. Their hopes and dreams that didn't always come true, but left them with no regrets

It was nice to attend the event and visit with the folks who put this together. Congratulations to everyone involved in making Wreaths Across America a success in Detroit Lakes and, as always, hats off to our veterans for all they do for us.

As for news from the House, the Legislature is scheduled to return to the Capitol on Feb. 20 for the start of the 2018 session. Preparation already is underway, but things will really kick into high gear at the start of the new year. The upcoming session will be a non-budget year, but a large number of challenges still remain. Look for a preview of some of the top issues for 2018 get closer to opening day.

In the meantime, my office is available if you need assistance with any issues. I also welcome your thoughts, ideas and suggestions on issues of interest as the 2018 legislative session approaches. I can be reached via this email address or you can call my office at 651-296-9918. I look forward to hearing from you!

Sincerely,

Steve
