SAINT PAUL, MN – Rep. Raymond Dehn (DFL-Minneapolis) and Sen. Bobby Joe Champion (DFL-Minneapolis) will be hosting a town hall meeting on March 24th. The meeting will focus on rail safety and recently introduced legislation to improve oil train safety. They will be joined by Rep. Mike Freiberg (DFL-Golden Valley) and Rep. Frank Hornstein (DFL-Minneapolis).
The last five weeks have seen five oil train derailments in our region resulting in explosions and fires that have taken days to extinguish. A large quantity of oil moves through Minnesota by train, including through densely populated urban areas. The U.S. Department of Transportation estimates that more than 200 fuel trains will derail over the next twenty years, including 10 in densely populated urban areas. The derailments are projected to cost more than $18 billion.
