Legislative Update- February 14, 2017

Tuesday, February 14, 2017

Dear Neighbors,

We have reached the second month of the 2017 legislative session. Already there’s been a lot of partisan posturing and we are sure to see more in the coming months. With that said, I’m committed to crafting a two year budget that ensures Minnesotans are given the opportunity they deserve to get ahead, and not to focus on the policies that divide us.

Here is an update from the Capitol:

Second Chance Coalition Day at the Capitol

Last Week, the Minnesota Second Chance Coalition held their advocacy day at the Capitol. I was honored to have the opportunity to speak at their rally.

The Minnesota Second Chance Coalition is a nonpartisan coalition of over 50 organizations.  They advocate for fair and responsible laws and policies that allow those who have committed crimes and served their sentences to fully support themselves and their families, and contribute to their communities to their full potential.

I’m pleased to have been working with the Coalition since 2010. A key bill I authored and is now law, known as ‘Ban-the-Box’ removed the criminal history checkbox from a majority of private sector job applications. I am appreciative of the Second Chance Coalition’s efforts and look forward to continuing my work with this honorable organization.

HF 217 Gets Hearing in the House Today

My bill to extend bar hours of operation until 4 a.m. during the 2018 Super Bowl has been granted a hearing in the House Commerce and Regulatory Committee. I look forward to the discussion and questions from committee members. As mentioned in a previous legislative update, the Senate companion bill was already heard a few weeks ago. I’m pleased to know the bill is moving quickly in both legislative bodies. Additionally, HF 217 has spurred legislative interest in keeping the extension of bar hours until 4 a.m. in place permanently. You can read about that bill and discussion here.

Please always feel free to contact me on any legislative topic or idea. I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

Raymond Dehn
