Legislative Update- February 6, 2017

Monday, February 6, 2017

Dear Neighbors,

The first month of session has come to a close. Here’s an update on what’s been happening at the Capitol:

Preemption in Committee

Last Thursday the House Jobs Committee heard a “preemption” bill that would stop local communities from setting their own policies for workers. This harmful Republican bill would stop communities from implementing pro-worker policies such as sick leave, family leave, or a higher minimum wage.  As a strong proponent of a minimum wage increase for our district’s constituents, I will vehemently oppose the bill if it comes before me for a vote. This is exactly the type of divisive, anti-worker legislation we’ve seen around the country. Minnesotans know they deserve a fair shake and this isn’t it. I came to the Capitol to help people get ahead, not to make it even harder for them to get by.

The bill’s next stop is the House Government Operations and Elections Committee on Wednesday.

Super Bowl Legislation Gets Hearing in the Senate

Yesterday’s Super Bowl is a reminder that Minnesota’s 2018 Super Bowl countdown has begun.  The Senate Companion to my bill was heard in the Senate Commerce Committee last week.  The legislation would allow bars to extend their hours of operation until 4 a.m. during the Super Bowl.  You can read about the Senate’s discussion of the bill here.

Town Hall Meeting February 8

This Wednesday, Representative Fue Lee and I will host a House District 59 A/B Town Hall Meeting at the Davis Center in Minneapolis.  I’ve attached the flyer with details of the event and hope to see you there!

Forward this to your Friends and Neighbors

Don’t forget to forward this update to your friends and neighbors so they can keep up with what’s going on at the Capitol. There’s a lot going on here and if people don’t know about it, they won’t be able to have their voices heard on the issues that matter to them. People can sign-up for my weekly e-updates here.

Please always feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.  I appreciate your input!

Sincerely,

Raymond Dehn

State Representative
