Legislative Update (Feb. 6, 2015)

Friday, February 6, 2015

Neighbors,

It is an honor to work hard for you at the Capitol, ensuring that your taxpayer funds are used wisely and control is given back to local governments.

Transferring Grant Authority

In December, it was revealed that the Department of Commerce, led by Commissioner Mike Rothman, is under investigation by the Office of the Legislative Auditor in response to concerns of misuse of more than $1 million of public funds by Community Action of Minnesota. In the wake of the scandals, I have concerns regarding the Department of Commerce’s ability to effectively manage taxpayer dollars, such as the distribution of grants that help low-income families afford heating and cooling costs. To ensure proper grant making authority while the Department of Commerce and its Commissioner are under state investigation, I’ve authored HF544, a bill to transfer the responsibility of managing the federal weatherization program and low-income home energy assistance program to the Department of Administration, which already has authority over several grant programs. I’m confident that my bill will ensure the proper administration of these grant programs, and the responsible use of every taxpayer dollar.

Legislative Appointments

This past week, I was appointed to the Governor’s Residence Council by Speaker Daudt. The residence, which has stood on Summit Avenue since 1912, was designed by a Minnesota architect and has housed every Governor and First Family since 1966, as well as several notable dignitaries. I’m looking forward to serving on the Council, and I am excited to offer my input on the best ways to preserve this historical asset.

I have also been appointed to the House Subcommittee on Metropolitan Council Accountability and Transparency, where I will work hard to ensure that the authority of the Met Council is reigned in. I’m eager to put forth reforms that allow for more input and control from local governments, putting city planning power back where it rightfully belongs.

It has been great to meet with so many constituents at the Capitol. Thank you for your involvement in the legislative process! As always, please contact me to discuss any legislation put before the House, or any other matters to which I can be of assistance.
