ALBRIGHT AUTHORS BILL TO TRANSFER GRANT AUTHORITY

Tuesday, February 3, 2015
ST. PAUL – State Rep. Tony Albright (R-Prior Lake) is introducing legislation (House File 544) transferring the responsibility of administering energy assistance grants to low-income Minnesotans from the Department of Commerce to the Department of Administration.

The Department of Commerce under Commissioner Mike Rothman is currently under investigation by the Office of the Legislative Auditor in response to reports of misuse of more than $1 million of public funds by Community Action of Minneapolis. Rep. Albright’s bill would transfer the responsibility of administering energy assistance grants to the Department of Administration, which has an office of grants management.

“As State Representative, my job is to make sure every tax dollar that is spent is done so efficiently and effectively,” said Albright. “While the Department of Commerce and its Commissioner Mike Rothman undergo a state investigation relating to misuse of public funds, it is imperative that we transfer management of the federal weatherization program and low-income home energy assistance program to the Department of Administration. By doing so, we can ensure the proper administration of these grant programs and the responsible use of every taxpayer dollar.”

Albright can be reached by phone at (651) 296-5185. He can also be contacted via email at rep.tony.albright@house.mn, or via mail at 407 State Office Building, 100 Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, St. Paul, MN 55155.
