Legislative Update (Jan. 23, 2015)

Friday, January 23, 2015

Neighbors,

I’m proud to report that the legislative session is off to a great start, and we are focusing on bills that brighten Minnesota’s future for generations to come. We are committed to making Minnesota a great place to live, work, and raise a family.

Last week, we passed our first bill on the House floor. HF6 implements Federal Tax Conformity, and immediately provides $19.9 million in tax relief to hardworking Minnesotans. This includes significant dedications to teachers, students, and homeowners, among others. I’m proud that we took the lead to ensure that you will save time and money this year on your taxes.

Conforming state tax code to federal standards can help to ease an already stressful process for many Minnesota families. The first bill I authored this session, HF96, conforms the estate tax to the federal exclusion amount. Minnesota has a much lower exemption amount for estate taxes, which encourages our retirees to leave our state for neighboring states with less restrictive policies. Furthermore, our current estate tax exclusion amount for our farmers and business owners is lower than the federal standard, negatively impacting these hardworking families and discouraging further investment in property. By conforming our estate tax code to federal standards, we can encourage more retirees to stay in our great state, and encourage farmers and business owners to continue to invest in our great land and infrastructure.

Please don’t hesitate to contact me to discuss issues that are important to you and your family. You can set up a time to meet with me at the Capitol by calling my Legislative Assistant at (651) 296-9183, or reach me directly via email at rep.tony.albright@house.mn. It is an honor to serve you.
