Legislative Update

Tuesday, March 18, 2014

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

As your representative in St. Paul, it is a privilege to work on issues important to the district and meet with constituents. Here are some things happening in District 55B.

Prior Lake High School Fab Lab

Prior Lake High School will be on the cutting edge of technology with a new Fab Lab, providing students access to digital fabrication. This new lab will be fantastic for students, and educators will be able to strengthen their STEM classes (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math).

I have also been working with the University of Minnesota robotics department and the Prior Lake superintendent to bring robotics to the classroom. With grad student mentors to assist high school students with robotic projects, this partnership is beneficial to both educational institutions and will create a more comprehensive curriculum at Prior Lake High School.

STEM education is so vital, and students need math, science and engineering skills to compete on a global level. The Fab Lab and robotics initiatives at Prior Lake High School will give students a hands-on learning experience and hopefully lead them to pursue STEM related degrees after graduation.

Eagle Scouts

I was honored to speak at a recent Eagle Scout Ceremony in Savage earlier this month. Ian Jamieson, Mitchell McGahan, Justin Miller and John Millerhagen are all bright young men and now proud Eagle Scouts. I was also surprised and humbled to be named a mentor by Ian Jamieson.

These Eagle Scouts have made an impact on their community and are very deserving of recognition. I am sure they will find success in whatever they choose to do next.

New Horizons

It was a privilege to visit with students and staff earlier this month at New Horizons Academy in Prior Lake.

With staff, I discussed several issues including challenges in early childhood development, nutrition and the importance of Pre-K education. I also had the opportunity to read to students and see first-hand how our youngest Minnesotans learn and play.

As always, thank you for the honor and privilege of being your state representative. If I can ever be of assistance to you on a matter of state government, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Sincerely,
