Legislative Update (May 21, 2019)

Tuesday, May 21, 2019

Friends,

Yesterday, the legislative session ended without a full state budget passed, but an agreement was reached on a budget between the legislative leaders. While many of the details of the budget agreements remain outstanding, but one thing we can say for certain is that there will be no new gas tax. Another part of the deal is the fees on titles and registrations that were scheduled to go up also will not be increased. This is great news and a solid win for Minnesotans.

The law that dedicates sales tax revenue from auto parts and supplies will continue to fund transportation needs and not be spent in other areas of state government. This is great news as we will continue to have this statutorily dedicated funding source for road and bridge needs across the State of Minnesota. Transportation is a core function of government and we always contended that this was the proper way to pay for road and bridge infrastructure.

Richard J. Ames Memorial Highway to Governor for Signature

On Sunday, the Minnesota House passed the Richard J Ames Memorial Highway bill to honor Dick Ames by renaming a route from Jordan to U.S. Highway 61 near Miesville. The Senate passed the bill earlier in the week.

It was my privilege to carry this bill to honor a man who meant and did a great deal to our community. You can watch the presentation of this bill in committee from earlier this session when members from the Ames family testified.
