Dear Neighbors,

Happy Easter! I can’t wait to go to church on Sunday and celebrate the resurrection with my family. Happy Easter and a Happy Passover!

School Safety

Today, House Republicans unveiled a series of bills we see as common sense measures to improve school safety. These include:

  • School resource officers, student support personnel, and other school security programs funded through increased Safe Schools revenue, including a floor level of funding for small schools.
  • School building security upgrades, and expanded use of Long-Term Facility Maintenance revenue for security projects, including emergency communications systems.
  • School-linked mental health programming to ensure better outcomes for all kids.
  • Physical security audit grants to provide state assistance to review facility security and crisis management policies.
  • Suicide prevention training for teachers to help educators learn how to engage and assist students experiencing mental distress.
  • School-based threat assessment teams established to assess, intervene, and report threats facing students, teachers, and staff.

I’ve heard from concerned parents, teachers, and school staff about some of the safety needs facing our schools. Our package of bills is something both parties can support, and will go a long way in improving safety in our classrooms.

Met Council Reform

Throughout my time in the legislature, I’ve worked to make the Metropolitan Council more transparent and accountable to Twin Cities residents. These unelected officials have the authority to tax, but the public can’t vote them out of office if they disapprove. That’s why I’m sponsoring legislation to do what most metropolitan planning organizations (MPO) do: put elected officials on the Met Council Board. This would align the Met Council with what most MPO’s do around the country. It makes for a more accountable, responsive entity, and I think that’s what our residents deserve.
