Legislative Update (April 28, 2017)

Friday, April 28, 2017

Dear Neighbors,

I’m happy to report that, as of now, the legislature is ahead of schedule. We passed all of our budget bills with five weeks to go, and just today released joint budget numbers for each area of our state’s government. Our main goal is to have a responsible budget signed into law that prioritizes education, tax relief, health care, and roads and bridges.

I’m fortunate to be part of this process as a member of the health and human services conference committee. Now that we have a budget allocation, I, along with four colleagues in the House and five in the Senate, can come together to iron out the differences in our respective proposals. This is a fun time to be involved as we see our budget take shape.

Although we still have plenty of time left, we’ve run into an apparent lack of engagement from the governor’s office. As we’re negotiating with the Senate, it would be very beneficial to have the governor or his staff letting us know where they stand on bills. This will make the process even faster, and would help us avoid rushing at the last second. We have less than a month left in session; it’s time for the governor to sit down with the House and Senate and come to an agreement for Minnesotans.

As we proceed through the negotiation process, I’ll be sure to keep you updated. Dominoes can fall very quickly in the final weeks of session, and I’ll make certain you’re informed.

Enjoy your weekend,

Tony
