Legislative Update (May 6, 2016)

Friday, May 6, 2016

Dear Neighbors,

The past two weeks have been busy in St. Paul. We’re approaching the end of the legislative session, and lots of bills are being heard and approved. I’m happy to see a number of my pieces of legislation moving through the process.

Health and Human Services Omnibus Bill

Last week, the House passed our omnibus bill containing our health and human services provisions. My bill, HF3729, made the final cut for our larger bill. You might remember, this legislation would allow couples to keep their retirement safe if one spouse needs home or community-based care. We need this change to combat a poor provision within Obamacare.

Now, a conference committee of senators and representatives is set to meet to discuss this bill and a number of others. Because it has wide bipartisan support, I’m hopeful for the inclusion of my bill language in the final agreement.

Bill Passes House

It wasn’t one of our large pieces of legislation, but one of my bills passed the House of Representatives on Monday. The bill, HF2445, makes a small, but necessary, change to the Board of Medical Practice. We passed this legislation on a 127-0 vote, and I expect it could be signed into law in the coming weeks.

Happy Mother’s Day

I’d like to wish all moms, especially my wife, Marianne, a happy Mother’s Day! Although they deserve more than one holiday each year, be sure to thank any mothers in your family. Have a great Mother’s Day, and enjoy the beautiful weather!
