Legislative Update - January 24, 2019

Dear Neighbors,

The 2019 legislative session is in full swing and I’m honored to again have the opportunity to represent our community at the State Capitol. We began the session with a new DFL majority in the Minnesota House, and I’m optimistic we can move forward an agenda that truly reflects our values and gives everyone an opportunity to succeed and prosper.

This work is already underway. Last week in the Capitol Rotunda the Children’s Defense Fund rolled-out their “Creating Beloved Community” agenda, with initiatives centered in dignity and equity, such as paid family and medical leave.

Listening Session with Attorney General Ellison

Please join us next Wednesday evening at the Hallie Q. Brown Community Center as I’ll be hosting a Community Listening Session with our state’s new Attorney General Keith Ellison. I’m excited for the potential to collaborate with Attorney General Ellison on a wide variety of issues impacting the community such as health care – including prescription drug price gouging, consumer protections, and strengthened economic security for families by addressing activity such as wage theft and predatory banking practices.

The meeting will take place from 6:00-7:30 p.m. It’s free to attend and everyone is welcome.

WHAT: Community Listening Session

WHO: Attorney General Keith Ellison, Rep. Rena Moran, community members

WHERE: Hallie Q. Brown Community Center, Multipurpose Room, 270 N Kent St., St. Paul, MN 55102

WHEN: Wednesday, January 30, 6:00 – 7:30 p.m.

Health and Human Services Policy Committee

This session I’m taking on a new responsibility of Chair of the Health and Human Services Policy Committee. In Minnesota, the lack of affordable, accessible health care remains a barrier for too many families. I look forward to working alongside my colleagues to deliver solutions to ensure Minnesotans – especially those with low incomes, people with disabilities, seniors, children, and other vulnerable folks – can get the care they need.

In our committee we will also work to end our state’s opioid crisis, which has caused tragedies all over the state for people of every demographic background. We have a responsibility to put together a comprehensive package of prevention, treatment, and recovery strategies. Additionally, Big Pharma has escaped any accountability, and they need to come to the table and be part of the solution.

Native communities have experienced a disproportionate brunt of this crisis. Tomorrow, we will travel to the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe and hold a hearing to gather input from tribal representatives about how we can best partner with them to save lives.

Your Legislators

House Image

Tonight, I’ll be appearing on “Your Legislators,” a weekly program airing on public television stations across the state. In Saint Paul, it airs on SPNN channel 19, and you can also watch it on their Facebook Page. It’s an hour-long, free form discussion answering questions from viewers. To join the conversation, you are invited to submit questions during the live broadcast by calling 1-800-726-3178, emailing yourlegislators@pioneer.org, or tweeting @YourLegislators.

Stay in Touch

It’s critically important to me that our community have access to everything happening at the State Legislature. What happens at the Capitol impacts us, so to do my job the most effectively, I need to hear your feedback. Please don’t hesitate to write or call me with your input, or call my office to schedule a time to visit my office.

It’s an honor to represent you at the State Capitol.

Sincerely,

Rena Moran

State Representative
